Yurts

A Short History

Yurts have been enjoyed for centuries, particularly in Mongolia. In fact, even when the Czar of Russia built castles for his lords after taking over Mongolia, they chose to stay in yurts and use their castles as stables.

There are two kinds of yurts; Mongolian and European. Mongolian yurts tend to be shorter because the Mongolian people themselves are shorter. Traditionally, the wood stove would be in the center and the smoke would go through the top. Inversely, modern European yurts have taller walls, and typically have the stove at the side of the yurt. We do offer Mongolian yurts even though they’re not listed, just ask!

People have been drawn to the free moving, unrestricted zen of the yurt, which occurs because of its round shape. Even Marco Polo lived in them for a time, and detailed his findings in the 13th century.
